Bezel Set Blue Boulder Opal Luck Bat Brooch in Oxidized Sterling Silver with Stag Beetle Wings

150.00

My mother collects Chinese cloisonné vases, and she particularly likes ones that have a stylized shape in the cloisons called a Luck Bat, which symbolizes luck and prosperity.
Something about this combination of boulder opal and life cast stag beetle mandibles reminded me of that Luck Bat figure.

The opal is a dark denim blue with a few white flecks, a central vein of dark red opalescence flanked by bands of bright green fire. The photo with the black background best represents the colors of the opal, but it looks even better in real life.

The "wings" are Stag Beetle mandibles, cast in sterling silver from a real beetle.

2 1/8" long by 3/4" wide

One of a kind, ships gift boxed.

Oxidized sterling silver, fine silver bezel, boulder opal, nickel silver pin bar.

If you're interested in the traditional properties and attributes of gemstones, here's a little bit about opals:
"It is a stone of deceptive hopes and illusions, secret passions, superstitions, the favourite stone of magicians and alchemists. Opals intensify intuition and promote inspiration. Opals help recollect the past lives. Magical properties are related to the color of stone and since Opal's colors are very diverse so are its magical properties. For example, on one hand Opal as a stone of sympathy and compassion is a protector of Nurses and Doctors, on the other hand it is a stone of thieves; it can clarify spirit and thoughts and also can induce its wearer to foolish actions. People with instable character would better avoid wearing Opal. To increase Opal's magical properties it should be mounted in gold or silver. Opal reaches its maximum power in October." -from Jewels-Empire.com
